David Emmons, Grade 8 US History Introductory Newsletter for Students and Parents:
Welcome Parents and Students, I will be your 8th grade history teacher, Coach Emmons! I am so excited to have a new year of students coming to learn the stories in United States History, while also improving our thinking, creativity, maturity, and vocabulary. In 8th Grade History we will have fun, learn a lot, and prioritize feeling safe and free to share our opinions with each other in a respectful way. After student teaching in my first year last year, I am thrilled to have my own classroom for the first time this year.
I know everyone will make mistakes, including me, so I plan to be patient while at the same time pushing kids to do their best to maintain a high standard. My recent pedagogical training has given me some big ideas on history classrooms and interesting ways to introduce material and skills to my students. This includes involving more student based learning and more episodic memory, instead of the classic "banking" methods long used by history teachers. My hope is that students will enjoy the class and look forward to coming each day.
I am always available by email ([email protected]) and hope to establish great lines of communication with my students and their parents. Lets have a great year, and please contact me with any questions!
